Cryptocurrency Influencer and podcast host Layah Heilpern called central bank digital currencies a tool for governments to control people.
In addition to her cryptocurrency podcasts, Layah Heilpern is also known for her bitcoin book Undressing Bitcoin: A Revealing Guide to the World’s Most Revolutionary Asset, released in September 2021.
In a recent interview, Heilpernn expressed her views on large-scale testing of state-owned stablcoins, saying that CBDCs would impose financial censorship on citizens in the future. Heilpern believes that blockchain-based central bank digital currencies could be created in a way that “fulfils the whims” of centralised authorities.
“Programmable money controlled by the state should scare you. If people can keep quiet about things because of censorship, with money it is easier for the government to put a hood over people. It’s like the restrictions once imposed by the authorities on unvaccinated people – government cryptocurrencies can only be spent on buying certain things,” says Heilpern.
She believes that even if CBDCs are positioned as digital currencies that are safe for the environment, they still won’t be able to solve the problem of rising inflation. According to the broadcaster, money is the energy that fuels people’s lives, so programmable money should alert any sane person.
Notably, other cryptocurrency industry participants have recently begun to raise similar concerns. Earlier, Erik Voorhees, CEO of trading platform ShapeShift, said that digital currencies could be used for general surveillance of the population, violating citizens’ privacy and confidentiality.
